Episode 5: Inklings (with Robyn Spady)

We discuss small portable looms just in time for summer travel: inkle looms with Robyn Spady and a review of the new Ashford Knitter's loom. And, in these dog days of summer, the audio essay "Dog Warps."

Syne, I just listened to the metal weaving episode and this inkle loom episode -- thanks again for very interesting material. As someone who is often dependent on grants, I hope you know that the choices made are often odd. (I was just turned down for one that would have supported research on the flow of books between Spain and Latin America. The only comment: perhaps I could have defined "flow." ????) Those who provide grants also have a history of very conservative choices and many online projects still go without support. Weavecast is the only podcast I keep up with regularly, and on payday I will make a contribution in appreciation.

Thanks for the friendly comments. As someone who's won grants, I'd appreciate any advice on where to find arts/education grants to apply for. I'm still interested in finding funding for expansion, contiuing expenses, etc. If you think of something and don't mind sharing, you can email me at syne@weavecast.com.

Happy weaving!

Thanks for another great podcast, Syne. I am wanting one of those little looms too, now! I have such a good time listening to your podcasts, with the mix of wonderful music, funny stories (super hairy wool!), real information, and inspiration. I loved episode 4 with Mary Zicafoose as well. The hardest thing is waiting a month between casts.... Can't wait for the next one..

Syne, your podcast seems to go from strength to strength and your interviews are consistently some of the best in the podosphere. And now you've gone and made me want a loom. I am not a weaver. I am a KNITTER, dammit! Have I mentioned lately how much I hate you?

Thanks for yet another great show Syne. I listed to it on my way to "Woolfest" which is the ONLY fiber related festival in the UK and guess what - yes I've come home with an Inklet! Your such an inspiration! I'll send you a picture of my first braid :)

High praise indeed! :> We'll get you weaving yet!

If it's any consolation, I've become obsessed with knitting too after listening to the ever-fabulous Cast-On.

All best,

Thanks for the great comments! Sometimes I too, have a hard time waiting a month between podcasts. My dirty little secret is that from time to time I try to take the podcast twice monthly, but life intervenes. Alas. Perhaps I'll have more computer time when the weather cools off.

All best,

I'm so glad to hear you've been inspired to try inkle weaving. I'll tell Robyn, she'll be delighted. Hope Woolfest was a blast. Wish I could have been there. :>

All best,

I'm always happy when a new episode of Weavecast comes out! This show was excellent, as usual. Your guests are always interesting, and Robyn Spady was no exception. I really enjoy the interviews as well as your essays.

I also heard you recently on Quirky Nomads in Blue State Battalion. It was so funny I had to listen to it twice!

Loved the Inkle show! This one inspired me to pull the dusty inkle loom off the shelf.

About funding/fund raising - probably worth checking out the Foundation Center (http://foundationcenter.org/), and find a local "cooperating collection". Particularly one that has the CD subscription. (For example: Seattle Public Library, Foundation Directory Online, The Fundraising Resource Center, (206) 386-4636).

Good luck - jamie

I'm a knitter who has been having weaving thoughts lately... I know I'm behind schedule, but I just listened to your "Inklings" episode and really enjoyed it! One question though -- for a beginning weaver, do you have any recommendations regarding the ashford knitter's loom vs. the kromski harp? (I'm reasonably mechanically inclined, so having to assemble the kromski isn't a big hurdle...)
thanks for such an informative show!

Isn't she though? Judith could teach toilet-bowl maintenance, and I'd sign up, certain that she'd off-handedly give me two ar three essential weaving tips!

Thank you! I'm glad you like BSB. That Sage Tyrtle is brilliant isn't she? I listen to Quirky Nomads, and I'm in awe.

Glad to hear your Inkle loom is getting to play again. Thanks so much for the grant tips! That's a great idea!

I have absolutely no experience with the Kromski, so couldn't say. You might try asking on the Yahoo Weaving list. It comprises a large pool of weaving experience and talent (and they're friendly folks, too.)

Of course, if Kromski loans me one of their rigid heddle looms, I'd be happy to review it for the show... ;>

Syne,

Thanks to your podcast, I purchased the Ashford Knitters loom. I took a private lesson at my LYS. The gals at my LYS had never seen one in person, and were just excited as I was to get to work with it!

They taught me how to warp the loom, as you would a floor loom, because I told them I wanted to start with this small loom and move up to the floor looms.

I am working on my first scarf and I am loving it! This loom is just a joy to work with!

Thank you for your wonderful review of the knitters loom!

I'll be posting pictures of my finished projects on the loom on my blog! Thanks again!
